It was a monster weekend of sport with the Monaco Grand Prix, FA Cup final and French Open first round all dominating the bank holiday headlines. We’ve looked back at the highlights…

Manchester United beat Manchester City 2-1 in the FA Cup final to deny their city rivals the double.

Underdogs United took the lead in the first half when Alejandro Garnacho capitalised on a defensive mix up for City before Kobbie Mainoo doubled the advantage before the break.

City struggled to break down United in the second half but did grab a consolation goal via Jeremy Doku in the closing stages.

The cup win lifts the pressure off under-fire United manager Erik Ten Hag, whose future remains up in the air after the Red Devils secured their lowest league position in Premier League history.

Last week, the FA agreed a four-year extension of its FA Cup US broadcasting rights deal with ESPN.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc held his nerve to convert pole position at his home Monaco Grand Prix into a controlled victory after a huge first-lap pile-up.

A collision between the two Haas cars and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez caused a red flag and led to a race of extreme tyre management by the leaders.

Leclerc controlled McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, team-mate Carlos Sainz and McLaren’s Lando Norris all race – without any of them making a pit stop – to take Ferrari’s second win of 2024.

Earlier this month, McLaren Racing penned a multi-year deal with e-commerce giant eBay.

Southampton were promoted to the Premier League by beating Leeds United in the EFL Championship playoff final.

Leeds started well but it was the Saints that took the lead through the in-form Adam Armstrong.

Dan James hit the post in the closing stages of the match, but Daniel Farke’s were unable break through meaning Southampton bounce straight back to English football’s top flight.

Last week, another recently-promoted club, Ipswich Town, partnered with First Bus last year.

Andy Murray may have played his final French Open singles match after losing to Stan Wawrinka in a one-sided first-round meeting between the veteran pair.

Britain’s Murray, 37, has said this year is likely to be his last one on tour and avoided surgery on an ankle injury in order to return to Roland Garros.

But his lack of court time was evident in a 6-4 6-4 6-2 loss to the 39-year-old Swiss.

Last month, the ATP Tour signed a multi-year partnership with Yokohama Tyres.

Iga Swiatek began her French Open title defence with a trademark 61-minute dismantling of qualifier Leolia Jeanjean.

The world number one is aiming to become the first woman since Justine Henin in 2007 to win three French Open titles in a row.

And the Pole got off to a strong start, cruising to a 6-1 6-2 win on the second day of play at Roland Garros.

Last week, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) announced a revamped calendar for 2025 following a two-year review into tennis’ grass court season.

Essex routed Kent by an innings and 96 runs in their County Championship clash at Canterbury.

Simon Harmer took 4-32 and Shane Snater 3-15 as the visitors skittled Kent for 101 in their second innings to narrow the gap on leaders Surrey to just two points.

The ECB has launched a new initiative, titled the Big Cricket Conversation, which invites fans, players and stakeholders to have their say on the culture of the sport.
