The Olympic Park for London 2012 has moved on another stage after a 10,000-page
planning application was recommended for approval by an independent body.
The application outlines plans for new sporting venues, river works and
spectator facilities at the 1 square-mile site in east London.
‘This is one of the biggest and most complex planning applications ever
prepared in this country,’ organizing committee chairman Sebastian Coe said.
‘The news that it has been recommended for approval is another key milestone for
us on the road to 2012.’
The plans will now be submitted to national and local government bodies for
final permission.
The site was previously used for industrial purposes, and an extensive
cleanup operation is already under way. Demolition work is also ongoing.
However, permission is still needed for new river walls, flood defenses and
access roads.
Plans for five permanent sports venues, three temporary arenas and spectator
facilities also need approval.
