Ascot Racecourse has been announced as one of the venues for the Red Bull Air Race World Championship which will return to new locations around the world this year following a three-year break.
Tickets are now on sale for the event which will see 12 pilots navigating their way around a low-level aerial track travelling at up to 230mph.
Charles Barnett, CEO Ascot, commented: ‘The Red Bull Air Race World Championship, like Ascot, is a respected global brand and showcases elite pilots to a worldwide audience. This is by far the most significant event outside Horse Racing that we have staged at the racecourse.’
Barnett continued: ‘The UK has a reputation as a leader in staging major sports events – the recent Olympic Games, of course, and high profile annual events such as Wimbledon, The Open Championship and, of course, Royal Ascot. We are delighted to be lending our expertise and sharing in that of the Red Bull team in bringing to Ascot one of the most vibrant and exciting sports on the calendar through the UK leg of the Red Bull Air Race.’
Reigning World Champion Paul Bonhomme of Britain, said of the return: ‘We’re excited in Team 55 to be given the green light again to race…and what a venue for the UK race. For 300 years there has been racing at Ascot…what a stunning stunning place to race aeroplanes. I am almost speechless that we’ll get to fly around the course that Queen Anne started in 1711…yes, 1711, the year 1711! The history of Ascot will probably never be beaten in the history of the air race. Awesome…no pressure!’
