The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced an extension to its current partnership with Atos Origin through to 2016, including the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, and the 2016 Olympics.

Atos Origin has been a key technology provider for the Olympic Movement since becoming the Worldwide Information Technology Partner in 2001 and is part of the IOC’s TOP top-tier sponsor programme.

While the size of the sponsorship fee is unknown, Atos is the fourth company to commit beyond 2012 with Panasonic and Samsung extending through to 2016 and Coca-Cola through to 2020.

The TOP programme, involving major corporations usually signing up for at least one four-year, two-Games cycle, brought in around $866m for the 2005-08 period.

Despite the tough economic picture the IOC has said it expects that figure to rise to around $1bn for the 2009-2012 cycle, which includes the Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Olympics.
