German car manufacturer BMW has struck a multi-million pound deal to become a Top Tier partner of the London 2012 Olympics, the 24th domestic sponsorship contract for the Games negotiated by organising committee LOCOG.

The contract will see the provision of a fleet of 4,000 vehicles including the Mini and BMW bicycles and motorcycles which will be used by athletes, officials, and staff during the Games.

As the official automotive partner of the Games, BMW is also a sustainability partner which means it will have to meet a low carbon and healthy living challenges.

The organisers of the London Olympics have now raised more than £550m of the £700m sponsorship target.
A spokesman said: ‘At Games time, BMW bicycles will be available for use by athletes in the Athletes Village and by London 2012 staff. BMW motorcycles will also be used in certain Olympic and Paralympic events.

‘A proportion of the fleet will be wheelchair-accessible and BMW will convert a number of vehicles for use by disabled drivers and passengers.’

BMW announced last month that it was withdrawing its investment in F1 with immediate effect due to the economic climate.
