Cadbury has announced that BMX and Track Cycling world champion Shanaze Reade will become an athlete ambassador for its London 2012 programme, with the aim of bringing the spirit of play to the local community.

As part of her role, Shanaze will join Cadbury and the charity Groundwork, for the ‘Sports v Stripes’ community programme.

The initiative uses games as a catalyst to connect people and build stronger communities.

The BMX champion has previously worked with Groundwork during the development of a BMX track at Tipkinder Park in Crewe where her old BMX group, the Cheshire Ghost Riders, are based.

Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington has also joined the Cadbury athlete ambassador team.

Nearly 14,000 people have so far participated in the Sports v Stripes community programme games, played at over 225 grassroots events across the UK and Ireland.

Norman Brodie, general manager of Cadbury’s London 2012 campaign, said: ‘We are delighted that Shanaze Reade is joining our growing team of athlete ambassadors and is kicking off her role by working with our community partner Groundwork’.

‘Shanaze truly epitomises the power of game playing and team spirit and we hope that her involvement inspires further people, up and down the country to get involved’.
