British Gymnastics is to partner with Cartoon Network to launch a new grassroots development venture as part of a three-year deal.

The POW! Academy, which will launch in the autumn, is designed to reward and inspire young gymnasts with the help of kids’ favourites The Powerpuff Girls, described as “the original ambassadors of girl power.”

The new certification scheme targets primary school children, between the ages of five and 11, who will be challenged to learn new skills in order to earn badges and rewards.

The programme will be rolled out through British Gymnastics’ members clubs and affiliated organisations across the UK from September.

Commenting on the creative partnership, Jane Allen CEO of British Gymnastics said: “We’re delighted to partner with Cartoon Network who share our passion for inspiring young people and having a positive influence on their development.

“This is an exciting and new type of partnership which will delight thousands of gymnasts. The Powerpuff Girls series resonates with our young gymnasts and their brand attributes of inclusivity, courage and teamwork are a good fit with our sport.

“We strive to ensure all gymnasts have a positive and rewarding experience, and this strategic partnership adds an exciting new element for gymnasts to enjoy.”

Vanessa Brookman, VP of content & creative, Turner Northern Europe said: “The Powerpuff Girls are an iconic superhero trio, who have been role models to a generation of kids and continue to inspire today with their message of empowerment and inclusivity.

“We are particularly delighted to partner with British Gymnastics on a scheme that compliments the fun and inspiring values embodied by this sport and offers a practical initiative for gymnasts to celebrate their achievements”.

The POW! Academy was launched with an event at British Gymnastics headquarters in Lilleshall, which saw star gymnast Ellie Downie take part in a taster session.

She said: “The POW! Academy is a great idea to keep kids excited to learn and display their skills in a brand-new way. Rewards are a key motivator but these don’t have to be medals or focused on achieving technical excellence.

“This initiative adds a new dimension with the focus firmly on the fun of taking part and feeling awesome. It will help ensure kids leave sessions with a big smile on their face.”

British Gymnastics claims further activations of its three-year partnership with Cartoon Network will be unveiled in coming months.

Last month, the governing body also revealed a new, three-year partnership with Parkwood Leisure, to expand opportunities for children to take part in gymnastics throughout the UK.
