As part of Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s ministerial reshuffle, Richard Caborn
is standing down as the Minister for Sport to become an ambassador for England’s
bid to host the 2018 World Cup.

Caborn, who was the longest serving Minister for Sport since the position was
created having held his post for six years, is to use his contacts in the
international sporting community to gather support for England’s bid to stage
the football showpiece.

Caborn’s successor as Minister for Sport has yet to be named.

In a letter welcoming him to the role, Prime Minister Brown said: ‘I’m
delighted you have agreed to use your valuable experience to act as my World Cup
ambassador, working closely with the Culture Secretary and the Football
Association, to promote our bid to host the 2018 World Cup.’
