Sochi (Russia), Salzburg (Austria) and PyeongChang (Republic of Korea) have been
confirmed as the three cities bidding to host the 2014 Winter Olympics after all
three bids met yesterday’s deadline to submit their application files.
The three cities were accepted as candidate cities by the IOC Executive Board
last June, winning through from a total of seven applicant cities, which also
included Jaca (Spain), Almaty (Kazakhstan), Sofia (Bulgaria) and Borjomi
(Georgia).
The IOC Evaluation Commission, chaired by IOC vice-president Mr Chiharu
Igaya, will now analyse the candidature files and make site inspections as
follows on the following dates – PyeongChang (14-17 February); Sochi (20-23
February); and Salzburg (14-17 March).
The Commission will then prepare a report that will be published and
submitted to IOC members no later than one month before the election of the host
city on 4 July during the 119th IOC session in Guatemala City.
