Deloitte and British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS), the national governing body for higher education sport, have announced a new partnership that will see them work together to offer leadership training and mentoring to university students across the UK.

The launch of the partnership follows research commissioned by BUCS earlier this year that revealed the positive effects that university sport has on employability.

According to the study, the average salary of graduates who played sport at university is £32,552, compared to £26,728 for those who did not.

The positive effects of sports participation at university go beyond earning potential, continues the report, with 94% of graduate employers agreeing these students also demonstrated good employability skills.

Heather Hancock, managing partner, client experience for Deloitte UK – one of the UK’s largest graduate recruiters – said: ‘Deloitte is a firm that champions the values and contribution that sport makes to the individual and to society.  We’ve seen this at close hand through our long term support for disability sport and the British Paralympic Association, through the Deloitte Ride Across Britain cycle event, in our role supporting the London 2012 Games, and in our firm’s flexible employment approach for elite athletes.’

‘This new partnership with BUCS allows us to work closely with students who have the skills and attributes we look for in graduates, and our people can get involved by offering mentoring and business workshops.’

Over the next five years, Deloitte and BUCS will work together on three key initiatives that will be taught through leadership academies, providing a mixture of practical and theory based learning around:

  • Skills training in leadership
  • Teamwork and communication
  • Increasing the participation and profile of disability sport and women’s sport on campus.

Speaking at the launch of the partnership at the University of Bath, BUCS CEO Karen Rothery added: ‘Deloitte, like us, recognise the power of sport so we are delighted to be launching this new partnership. We will work together creatively on an innovative and experiential programme of activity that genuinely benefits students. We look forward to working closely over the coming years to deliver against our vision as an organisation, to enhance the student experience through sport.’
