The Sport Industry Group is delighted to announce that entries for the BT Sport Industry Awards 2014 are now open, and the time has come to submit the best work from a year defined by the continued success of British sport.
Who would have thought the euphoric sporting highs that became so familiar during London 2012 could continue through to 2013? And yet the Lions roared with a first Tour victory in 16 years, Andy Murray became Wimbledon’s first British men’s singles champion in 77 years, Chris Froome’s momentous Tour de France success was arguably even more comprehensive than Sir Bradley Wiggins’ triumph 12 months earlier, and the remarkable dominance of the England cricket team helped secure a third consecutive Ashes Series win over Australia.
The winning didn’t stop on the field, with the last 12 months witnessing incredible work once again from brands, agencies, rights holders and community organisations all successfully capitalising on and helping to drive the sporting delirium that sweeps the country.
Groundbreaking deals have been signed and activated in unique and innovative ways, providing proof for an industry that continues to stand above the rest as the most dynamic sector in the UK.
The UK sport industry continues to thrive, with a Sport England survey revealing that sport’s contribution to the English economy amounts to £20.3 billion per annum, creating more impact in the UK economy than insurance, accounting, telecoms and car sales. In fact, the growth of sport has outstripped the English economy as a whole. The sector has been resilient despite unfavourable economic conditions and punches well above its weight – no surprise when you consider that the industry continues to attract some of the most creative minds in the world.
And the future looks bright – having cemented the UK as the centre of the sporting universe last summer, the next few years will continue to see the world’s greatest athletes descend on the UK’s tracks, fields and pitches, hosting the Rugby League World Cup in 2013, the Commonwealth Games in 2014, the Rugby Union World Cup in 2015, and World Athletics Championships in 2017.
At the BT Sport Industry Awards 2014, all this will be celebrated as the best work from marketing, PR, sponsorship, talent management, advertising, community investment, social media and branding is rewarded at the prestigious ceremony. Murray, Froome, Bell, Swann, Farah, Rose, North and Halfpenny have all had their moment in the sun this year – now it’s time to show off your work.
