A huge fire has broken out at a disused warehouse located right next to the proposed site in East London where the new Olympic Stadium for London 2012 is to be built.
Around 75 firefighters have been called in to fight the large blaze at the warehouse in Waterden Road, Hackney Wick, near Stratford.
Waterden Road runs right through the site where the 2012 Olympics will be held although it is unclear how much damage has been done to the location.
The warehouse is on the western edge of the proposed site of the Olympic Village and was set to be demolished in the next few months.
The blaze created a large black smoke cloud which could be viewed right across the London skyline.
Chief executive of the Olympic Delivery Authority David Higgins said: ‘There will be a full investigation into this fire in a disused warehouse which was being prepared for demolition. Initial indications would suggest that this was an accident rather than arson. We are in touch with local residents and are keeping them informed of the situation.
‘There has been a first class response from the emergency services. Meanwhile work is continuing in the rest of the park.’
