FirstGroup has won a major contract to run bus services for the millions of spectators at the London 2012 Olympics.

The company beat 78 other contenders to become preferred bidder for the contract, with a value of about £20m.

FirstGroup, which ran a fleet of buses carrying athletes, officials and the media during the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, is set to provide around 500 buses and coaches for London 2012.

The bidding for the Games contract started in August last year.

The company has about 8,500 buses and coaches around the UK and also runs several train franchises.
