The official website for London 2012 Olympic Games tickets in France, Eventour2012, has crashed without selling a ticket.

The French Olympic Committee’s official reselling agent was due to start selling its allocation to pre-registered applicants at 8am Monday morning, but thousands of people across Europe were met with a message reading:

‘For technical reasons we invite you to return to the site www.eventeam2012.fr from 14.00 (13.00 BST). Thank you for your understanding’.

The website was closed with the message posted at exactly 8am.

The overloading of the French computer system came about because of a last-minute rush by UK residents to pre-register – which allows users access to a 48-hour window of private sales before the site is open to the general public.

4,000 of the pre-registered hopefuls are believed to be UK residents.

According to media reports – only four countries still have tickets available for individual sale apart from the French: Slovakia, Estonia, Switzerland and Poland – although Poland is charging £100 postage fees on a ticket.

Some countries have promised to release any unsold tickets later this month, with France set to make theirs available on 15th June, Denmark and Liechtenstein on 20th June, while Austria, Bulgaria, Norway and Sweden will release what they have left on 28th June.
