Foster’s Radler bought an Australian oasis to the heart of London on Wednesday by unveiling its very own beach volleyball court in Covent Garden, with members of the public given the chance to go up against Team GB stars Zara Dampney and Lucy Boulton – two years after they endured fierce competition on the court at London 2012.
The drink’s brand transformed the piazza with 60 tonnes to be exact of sand, with top athletes demonstrating their skills on the temporary court, with the British volleyball pair inviting the public to join them for a game throughout the day.
Beach volleyball proved to be one of the most attended sports at London 2012, with a purpose-built 15,000 seat stadium positioned in Horse Guards Parade.
It was the most popular sport at London 2012 among government officials, buying almost twice the number of tickets for the sport, compared to athletics.
With the Commonwealth Games soon coming to a close in Glasgow, attention will later turn to the next edition – Gold Coast 2018.
Beach volleyball is not currently a Commonwealth Games sport, but the brand also hinted that it would be supporting the sport’s fight for inclusion in the roster.
Speaking on the day, Zara Dampney said: ‘It’s great that people have started to recognise beach volleyball, especially since the Olympics. All we’ve got to do now is keep that momentum going and hopefully you’ll be seeing us at Gold Coast 2018!’
Foster’s Radler marketing manager, Emma Sherwood-Smith, added: ‘We believe that a world with more beach volleyball is a better world, so we’re campaigning for more of this great sport, starting with the Covent Garden beach volleyball court…now that’s a good call!’
