Organisers of the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships have revealed their plans for the competition which will take place in Glasgow after the city beat Paris and Orlando in their bid to host the event.
The competition, which will see an estimated 80 countries and 500 gymnasts compete, will also act as a qualifying event for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The Championships will be staged 15 months after the 2014 Commonwealth Games which will also take place in Glasgow. The events are set to provide a £5m boost to the economy.
The Championships will take place in The Hydro, a 12,000 seat venue which is currently under construction at an estimated cost of £120m. The Hydro will also host several Commonwealth sports as well music and entertainment events.
Glasgow City Council Councillor, Gordon Matheson, commented: ‘The 2015 World Gymnastics Championships will continue Glasgow’s long and proud sporting journey. Glasgow is recognised as one of the world’s leading sporting cities thanks to our investment in facilities such as The Hydro and through our commitment to bringing international sporting events to the city.’
Matheson added: ‘That is why we bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, why we bid for the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships and why we are bidding for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. The eyes of the world will be on us and we will not disappoint.’
Bruno Grandi, president of the Federation of International Gymnastics said: ‘It will be a privilege to share in the emotions and experiences an event of this calibre has to offer, with its impressive bill of gymnasts from around the world. I will be honoured to be in Glasgow in 2015 in a city and a country with such high gymnastic potential, a country steeped in the fundamental values which are the cornerstones of the success and reputation of our sport.’
