In an exclusive interview with Sportindustry.biz, Dave Gordon, BBC’s head of major events, has admitted that he is ‘very surprised’ at the emission of the Winter Olympic Games from the proposed Listed Events regulations.

Under new recommendations, the Winter Olympics is set to be removed from the ‘A-list’ of the Listed Events regulations designed to protect certain key sports events to be screened by terrestrial broadcasters only.

If the government decides to push forward with the recommendations, the new regulations will be applied after the 2010 Winter Olympics, which is being broadcast by the BBC.

Gordon said that the BBC would ‘would love’ to keep showing the Winter Games regardless of the Listed Events decision.

Gordon has worked on seven Olympic Games and six Winter Olympics for the BBC. Click here to see the full exclusive interview where he discusses the challenges of scheduling such a large event and living up to the broadcaster’s public service remit.
