Greenwich Royal Park is due to host the equestrian events at the London 2012 Olympics after the plans to use the facility were approved by Greenwich Council’s Planning Committee.

Some local residents had objected to the site being used saying that it would cause lasting damage.

All the structures built for the Olympics in Greenwich, including a 23,000-seat arena, would be temporary and removed according to Sebastian Coe, Chairman of the London 2012 Organising Committee.

‘This great Park is on loan to the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games and the people of the world.  We must return it to the residents of Greenwich, to Londoners and visitors from the UK and around the world in the same condition, or better, than it was loaned to us,’ said Lord Coe.

Once the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are over, the site will be restored to its former use in accordance with a Site Reinstatement Plan to be agreed by Greenwich Council, in consultation with the Royal Parks and other statutory bodies.

As it heads towards its £2bn budget for staging the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Local Organising Committee has seven domestic Tier One Partners – adidas, BMW, BP, British Airways, BT, EDF and Lloyds TSB.

There are also a number of Worldwide Olympic Partners signed up for London 2012 including Coca-Cola, Acer, Atos Origin, GE, McDonald’s, Omega, Panasonic, Samsung and Visa.
