London 2012 is withdrawing 500,000 Olympic football tickets from sale, while 200,000 contingency tickets for other sports have been made available.

Organisers are set to reduce capacity at Hampden Park in Glasgow and Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium – with the latter’s entire upper tier to be closed for some games.

Tiers and whole sections of stadiums will be closed to reduce capacities across all six Games venues, which also includes City of Coventry Stadium, Manchester United’s Old Trafford, St James’ Park in Newcastle and London’s Wembley Stadium.

As it stands, 700,000 tickets remain unsold, with 250,000 football tickets and 50,000 tickets for other sports still currently on sale, as well as a reported 200,000 football tickets and 200,000 tickets to other sports that have been returned by National Olympic Committees.

150,000 of these tickets will now to be made available for school children through LOCOG’s Ticketshare initiative.

According to London 2012 organisers around 1 million football tickets have been left unsold, but that figure will now be halved by the capacity reduction that will take place in certain stadiums.

For example, Team GB’s women take on New Zealand in Cardiff on 25th July, with the capacity scaled down from 75,000 to 40,000.

Tickets are still available for sports including athletics and hockey in the Olympic Park, beach volleyball in Horse Guards Parade, as well as the higher price bands of the opening and closing ceremonies.
