Fishing, ping pong and pool are amongst the sports set for a huge boost in exposure, after Matchroom Sport – run by British sports promoter Barry Hearn – agreed new broadcast rights deal with Sky Sports for a number of events.
The five-year agreement guarantees broadcast coverage of Matchroom properties including the Mosconi Cup pool tournament, dubbed the Ryder Cup of pool; the World Championship of Ping Pong, Hearn’s attempt to revitalise table tennis; the Fish O’Mania fishing event; the World Seniors Snooker Championship; the PGA EuroPro Tour, a 15-event golf development tour; and the Weber Cup ten-pin bowling competition.
Other events covered by the deal are the World Pool Masters, the World Cup of Pool and the US-based FLW Outdoors Bass Fishing circuit.
Hearn said: ‘Our longstanding relationship with Sky Sports has been a vital ingredient in the Matchroom story over the years.’
‘Without doubt, Sky Sports has always been the pioneer in sports TV with production values and levels of creativity that leave the competition in their wake.’
Hearn also spoke at last month’s Nolan Partners Sport Industry Breakfast Club, the first of the year, on his latest sporting ventures, as well as his work within the boxing world. Matchroom already has existing deals with Sky Sports for boxing’s Prizefighter series and 50 days of PDC Darts tournaments every year.
