With the Winter Olympics and Paralympics just a little over a year away, the International Olympic Committee has given the Vancouver 2010 Organising Committee (VANOC) a positive report on the city’s preparations.

Now that the action in Beijing has officially calmed down, the IOC has turned its focus to Vancouver and the governing body’s latest Commission report confirmed that the organizing committee was right on track.

VANOC learned ‘many important lessons during their stay in Beijing as part of the IOC’s Observer’s Programme, and this can be seen in their planning, which is being fine-tuned as VANOC moves into its operational phase,’ IOC Coordination Commission Chairman René Fasel said following a visit to the Canadian city.

During the trip, the IOC reviewed the venues in the Whistler area, which will host the skiing and sliding sports as well as house the athletes. VANOC also announced that the temporary housing from the Whistler athletes’ village will later be used in the fight against homelessness across British Columbia.

Fasel claimed the constructions Whistler were impressive and that the majority of them were complete, sure to be ready by a year from February, when the Games begin.

The venues will start to be tested with 17 upcoming sport events in preparation for the 2010 Olympics.
