London 2012 will continue to come under the spotlight in the wake of last week’s
controversial logo launch with inspectors from the International Olympic
Committee beginning a three-day inspection of the preparations for the Games
today.
The IOC, who will send a delegation to inspect venues once a year until 2008,
will visit the site of the Olympic Park in Stratford, East London to review the
progress.
While most of the building work will not begin until next year, the tunnels
that have been dug to carry power cables through the site have been completed
and organisers say work is on schedule.
Following the annual review next year, inspections will be increased to once
every six months.
Although the IOC inspection is in London primarily to run the rule over
construction targets, the subject of the new logo for the Games will inevitably
be up for discussion.
While the logo was given the green light by the IOC prior to launch, the
Olympic governing body is believed to be deeply concerned at the communications
strategy behind the introduction of the new branding.
The launch of the new logo prompted widespread criticism across the UK with
thousands signing online petitions to get the branding redesigned.
LOCOG, the 2012 organising committee, has stood firm however, reiterating
that the new logo is here to stay.
