ITV has been announced as an official partner of the 8th Special Olympics GB National Summer Games, taking place in Leicester from 25 to 31 July.

The partnership represents the first time the Games will gain national exposure, as it will receive coverage prior to and during the competition on ITV1.

Through the ITV Regional News Network, the National Games are expected to reach the broadcaster’s audience of up to 30 million viewers per week.

ITV will also participate in the build-up to the Games by covering the national Torch Relay and profiling Special Olympics athletes as they prepare for the event.

During Games week, ITV’s Regional News Network will bring daily highlights from the events.

Held every four years, the Special Olympics GB National Summer Games attracts over 2,700 athletes, 1,200 coaches, 1,500 volunteers and 6,000 families, and is the third Olympic movement alongside the Olympics and Paralympics.

Ted Cassidy MBE, Games Chairman, said: ‘This is a ground breaking agreement for Special Olympics GB National Summer Games Leicester 2009. We are delighted that such a major broadcasting corporation, ITV, has stepped forward to lead the way to highlight the Special Olympics movement and it is a fantastic opportunity for the nation to gain an appreciation of the sporting talents of people with learning disabilities.’
