Barclays Premier League club Liverpool FC have announced plans to increase the capacity of Anfield over two phases of development which will eventually take the overall capacity to just under 60,000.
The first phase will see an additional 8,500 seats added to Anfield’s Main Stand taking the capacity of the stand to 21,000 and 54,000 overall. The second phase will centre around the Anfield Road Stand which will see an extra 4,800 seats added as well as improved spectator areas.
The increase is part of the club’s effort to increase matchday revenues with the first phase of construction set to be completed in time for the 2016-17 season. Despite leading the way in points this season, Liverpool trail their main rivals in terms of matchday revenue with Arsenal’s Emirates able to host 60,000 and Old Trafford 75,000.
Liverpool’s managing director Ian Ayre said of the plans: ‘As part of our proposed stadium redevelopment project, we have unveiled the detail of our ambitious plans for an expanded Main Stand and Anfield Road stand and are embarking on a consultation process which will shape and inform our planning application.’
Ayre added: ‘In order to move forward with our expansion plans we need to have certainty that we can navigate the complex planning process and secure the support of the community, local home owners, businesses and other key stakeholders. This consultation exercise is an important part of this process.’
