The London 2012 organising committee LOCOG has added the category of clothing
and homeware to its top-tier sponsorship slots taking the total number of brands
to be linked to the Games at the highest level of affiliation to eight.
With LloydsTSB and EDF already signed up to the banking and insurance and
utilities categories respectively, clothing and homeware has been added as a new
Tier One category along with telecoms, automotive, airline, sportswear and oil
and gas.
London 2012 had initially been seeking six Tier One partners each paying in
the region of £100m but, with the LloydsTSB and EDF deals each believed to be
substantially lower than this sum, some critics believe that the number of
top-tier spaces available has been expanded in order to meet the budgetary
demands.
For its part, London 2012 stated that, in making the announcement of the new
category addition, it was merely responding to the substantial interest from
this sector in the Games.
In addition to the Games related marketing rights, it is anticipated that the
prospective clothing and homeware partner would provide suits for Team GB and
Paralympics GB for both Vancouver 2010 and London 2012.
In addition, they would also provide Team GB and Paralympics GB with uniforms
for the opening and closing ceremonies of Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 as well
as soft furnishings for the Olympic Village in 2012.
