The window for applying for tickets for the London 2012 Olympic Games
has now passed, although the deadline was extended by one hour due to a
last-minute surge in demand.

The original time limit for ticket applications was 23:59, but sales were accepted up until 01:00 because of the large number of people trying to access the site.

According to media reports, managers of the London 2012 website have denied it crashed, but admitted it had been slowed down after coming under severe strain from 22:30.

Ticket prices were announced last year, with full price tickets starting at £20 across all sports – while LOCOG has created an innovative ‘Pay Your Age’ scheme at more than 220 sessions for young people, aged 16 and under, when the Games begin on 27th July 2012.

The most expensive ticket on offer cost £2,012 – the best seat available for the opening ceremony.

Olympic organisers are yet to release how many applications have been received but chairman of London 2012 Lord Coe added that there had been a ‘massive surge’ in ticket applications over the weekend.

Meanwhile, research released by P&G has revealed that 70% of UK mums did not apply for any tickets to the Games, either believing there wasn’t a chance of getting any tickets (25%) or simply due to lack of time (1 in 6).

The research also showed that 47% of mums believed a large proportion of the tickets would not be going to the public, which has prompted P&G to give away 90% of its ticket allocation to mums and families.

P&G has teamed up with former Olympic Silver medallist and mother of three, Sharron Davies MBE to highlight the different ways everyone can get involved in the Games.

Sharron comments: ‘Whilst this research suggests that some mums may feel they are unlikely to get tickets following the close of the official ballot, the reality is that there will be plenty of opportunities and I’m so glad to hear that P&G is encouraging families to get involved in the Games’.
