Mayor Announces Further Sports Funding

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has announced a further £2.4m funding for 18 projects across the capital to help increase participation in sport and physical activity amongst Londoners.  

This brings the total awarded by the Mayor for improving sports facilities and participation throughout the capital to £5.4m, from his ring-fenced total budget of £15.5m from his Olympic Sports Legacy Programme.??

The 18 projects auditioned for the funding and were selected out of over 100 entries.??

The aim is that these 18 projects will engage up to 200,000 Londoners of all ages over the next two years.??

In some cases, the projects also aim to use sport in innovative ways to tackle issues such as youth crime and social exclusion, thereby helping to deliver some of the key objectives of the Mayor’s Time for Action strategy.??

‘Through my legacy programme you can sign up to receive training as a sports coach or volunteer, you can apply for funding for new sports facilities, and we are today launching a range of exciting and innovative sports programmes for Londoners of all ages,’ said the Mayor.??

‘Now really is the time to get involved, get off the sofa, get active and become part of London’s Olympic sporting legacy,’ he added.

Other projects which will receive funding include The Panathlon Foundation Ltd which provides a programme of coaching and competitive sport for seriously disabled children and young people in special schools.

??Also the London Jewish Forum for a programme of sports initiatives for the orthodox Haredi community which traditionally has amongst the lowest rates of participation in sports and Access Sport which will set up 50 sports clubs in the Olympic Boroughs, including 5 BMX clubs, and aims to make direct use of Olympic venues.
