Sir Robert McAlpine, the owner of the construction firm that built the new
Emirates Stadium for FA Premier League club Arsenal, has won the contract to
build the flagship Olympic stadium for London 2012.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) announced that it had signed a
memorandum of understanding with McAlpine over the construction project for
which it bid close to £630m according to speculation.

The appointment of McAlpine had long been expected given it was the sole
contractor in the frame but was only confirmed once the London Development
Agency had completed the acquisition of all of the land for the Olympic Park
site in Stratford.

The acquisition process involved relocating 208 businesses, 425 residents, 35
traveller families, and 64 allotment holders.

The Olympic Stadium will be the centerpiece of the Park seating 80,000 people
on a 500-acre site.

The Emirates stadium in north London, completed last year, was widely held up
as an example of a successful construction project, delivered on time and
budget, in sharp contrast with the problems that beset the new Wembley stadium.
