Mediarex Sports & Entertainment (MSE), the parent company behind the Global Poker Index (GPI), will be launching a professional team poker initiative when the Global Poker League debuts in 2016.

The Global Poker League is looking to position the game as form of entertainment, in a bid for GPI to become the equivalent of the NFL, NBA, NASCAR, MLB, ATP or PGA for poker.

The Global Poker League live events will feature its own arena, ‘The Cube’ which will be a portable 20ft one-way sound proofed cube to help engage fans.

Creating engaging stories, promoting the elite poker players, building a new infrastructure for different poker audiences and delivering engaging events are all high on the agenda for MSE and the Global Poker League.

Alexandre Dreyfus, CEO of MSE, commented: “We’ve been talking and working tirelessly for a long time about how we ‘sportify’ poker and the launch of the Global Poker League is a great stepping stone on our route to achieving that. This isn’t going to be ‘yet another poker event’ – we’ll be bringing something new and exciting to the table.”
