Hugh Robertson has been confirmed as the new Minister for Sport, combining both the roles of his predecessor Gerry Sutcliffe with those of former Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell.
The 47-year-old former Major in the Life Guards will have one of the most high-profile roles in the new coalition Government led by Conservative Party leader David Cameron.
As well as his responsibility for the 2012 London Olympics, Robertson will also be the Government spokesman on England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup.
Robertson was last week re-elected as the MP for Faversham and Mid Kent, a post he has held since 2001, with a majority of 17,088, making his one of the safest seats in Britain.
Robertson, who has spent six years as Shadow Sports Minister, will report directly into Jeremy Hunt, the new Minister for Culture, Media & Sport.
