The Queen will open the London 2012 Paralympic Games in the Olympic Stadium on the 29th August – now less than six months away. Her Majesty is already scheduled to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on 27th July, but it has since been confirmed that The Queen will now appear alongside her husband, The Duke of Edinburgh, at both Games.

As Head of State, The Queen will proclaim: ‘I declare open the London 2012 Paralympic Games.’

The announcement means that London 2012 will mark the first time ever that The Queen has opened a Paralympic Games, although Prince Charles did open the event in 1984, when the Paralympic Games were jointly held at Stoke Mandeville in Britain and New York in the United States.

The Queen’s father, King George VI, opened the last Olympic Games in London in 1948 at Wembley Stadium while his grandfather, King Edward VII, opened the first Olympic Games in the English capital in 1908.
