Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd, a Worldwide Olympic Partner in the wireless communications equipment category, has launched its London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay University programme. ??
Samsung is teaming up with 31 university partners across the UK to create a Torchbearer nomination programme that will reflect the core value of the Olympic movement and the rich heritage of each institution.
Through this nomination programme – which is open to students, staff members and the community surrounding the university – three Torchbearers will be selected to represent each institution in the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. ??
Professor Neil Gorman, vice-chancellor at Nottingham Trent University said: ‘It is a great privilege that Samsung has approached us with such a fantastic opportunity, we are delighted that we can offer our students and staff a once-in-a-lifetime experience in recognition of their hard work and contribution to the community’.
‘In the coming weeks, we will be putting this programme to good use and attributing places to students and staff who have demonstrated excellence in teaching, academic and sporting performance’.??

The selected university representatives will be part of 8,000 Torchbearers who will pass on the Olympic Flame across the UK – starting in Land’s End on 18th May 2012 on its 70 day journey; it will reach 66 communities of which 95% of the UK population will be within one hour’s distance of this historic moment. ??
A total of 31 educational establishments in the UK are taking part – with all the applications being co-judged by Samsung and panels from each university, and put forward to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) by the end of October.??
Through this programme, Samsung aims to strengthen the relationship with the higher education sector to further support educational institutions future investment programmes, facilitate the development of student skills and capabilities over the long term as a permanent legacy of London 2012 Olympic Games.??
The programme will culminate in an Awards Ceremony in December 2011 to recognise all students and staff who have participated in the programme from all 31 educational establishments and have been selected as London 2012 Torchbearers.?? ??
