David Cameron announced at the Sport Industry Lecture that he is to bolster the
Conservative Party’s recently formed Olympics Oversight Committee with some
leading figures from sport in order to better shadow the London 2012 project.
The committee, which is chaired by former chairman and chief executive of
British Land, Sir John Ritblat and also includes Lord Stevens who is running the
review of corruption in football, will be added to with some leading figures
from sport in order to improve the experience and knowledge base of the
Conservative Party’s Olympic team.
Stated Cameron: ‘We need to be ready for what is a massive infrastructural
challenge. That’s why the Conservative Party recently announced the formation of
an Olympics Oversight Committee to shadow every aspect of the preparation for
the games, from construction to security.
‘The group will carry out detailed on-going scrutiny of the preparations for
the Olympics, assess potential problems and shortcomings and provide expert
advice to me and my team.’
Cameron stated that he is to meet London 2012 supremo Lord Coe next week to
review the Olympic project and consider names to be added to the committee.
