Sir Clive Woodward has announced his departure from the British Olympic Association (BOA), where he has been director of sport since 2006. Woodward, who coached England’s rugby team to its 2003 Rugby World Cup win, worked for the BOA in the build-up to the Games in both Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

‘Post London 2012 is the right time for me to leave the BOA, which is now taking a new direction following a home Games,’ he told the BBC. ‘The challenge of delivering a home Olympic Games to our largest ever Olympic team has been exhilarating.’

Woodward leaves the role amidst media speculation that he could return as chef de mission for Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016 if Sebastian Coe, as expected, takes over the leadership of the BOA. ‘Coe… is an admirer and a part-time role would suit both parties,’ claimed the Daily Telegraph.

Woodward coached England’s rugby team from 1997 to 2004. Before taking on his role at the BOA he also worked briefly as performance director and director of football at Southampton Football Club.
