Wayne Instrell of Bedford Academy and Leicestershire-based PE teacher, Lesley Reynolds of Brockington College in Enderby, were awarded the title of Sky Sports Living for Sport Student and Sport Teacher of the Year, respectively, at the Sky Sports Living for Sport Awards 2012 on Friday.
Joining finalists from across the UK at the awards ceremony, Wayne and Lesley were presented with their trophies by Sky Sports Living for Sport Ambassadors, Olympic heptathlete Jessica Ennis and sprint legend Darren Campbell.
The Awards, which recognise the efforts of students and teachers during 2012, celebrate the successful way secondary schools are using sport to inspire young people, thanks to their involvement in Sky Sports Living for Sport, a free initiative delivered in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust.
Darren Campbell commented: ‘In my role as Ambassador I have seen first-hand how much of an impact Sky Sports Living for Sport is having on young people throughout the UK. It’s great to hear how pupils’ attitudes towards both sport and education have shifted and to see how teachers are helping them to practice the skills that they have learnt which will help them to succeed in the future. My heartfelt congratulations to Wayne and Lesley, their stories are fantastic example of the power of sport to change lives.’
The Student of the Year 2012 will receive a £100 sports voucher and his or her school will also receive an extra visit from an Athlete Mentor and £2,000 towards their school’s next Sky Sports Living for Sport project.
The Teacher of the Year 2012 and two runner-ups will win £2,000 and £1,000 respectively towards their school’s next Sky Sports Living for Sport project. In addition, all three Teacher of the Year finalists will each receive a year’s free Sky Sports subscription, a trophy and certificate.
