Students at six Gosport schools got the chance to meet Olympic gold medal winning sprinter Darren Campbell on Monday. Darren was in Hampshire to pay a special visit to Bridgemary Community Sports College which won a Sky Sports Living for Sport recognition award at the Youth Sport Trust conference in October last year.

In his role as Ambassador for Sky Sports Living for Sport, which uses sports stars and sports skills to improve the lives of youngsters across the UK, Darren visited the school to meet the students currently involved in its Sky Sports Living for Sport projects and thank them for their efforts.

Keen to share their special visitor with other schools in the borough, Bridgemary Community Sports College invited Darren to take part in a special tour to celebrate his visit, including stops at five local primary schools which included meeting students in Holbrook, Bedenham, Woodcot, Peel Common and Grange primary schools in Gosport.

At each school pupils from Bridgemary Community Sports College led a sports themed assembly, after which the primary students were given the opportunity to host a question and answer session with Darren.

Speaking about Darren’s visit, assistant head teacher Jo Radford commented: ‘We were absolutely delighted to welcome one of Britain’s most successful Olympic sprinters to our school.  Our students have worked extremely hard on their Sky Sports Living for Sport projects over the past two years and to see that work rewarded with a visit from a truly inspirational athlete gave them a school day they will never forget.’

‘We were really keen to share Darren’s visit with other schools in the region and are equally delighted that five local primaries also got the chance to meet with Darren and learn more about what it takes to pursue a sporting career.’

Darren spoke to sportindustry.biz earlier this year about drug-use in athletics, retiring from sport, and being a Sky Sports Living for Sport ambassador.

Launched nine years ago, Sky Sports Living for Sport has worked with over 1500 schools and 40,000 young people to improve their lives through sport.

The free initiative encourages pupils to take on a series of different sports activities and put their new skills and confidence into practice by managing their own sporting event.

A team of 49 Athlete Mentors, all of whom are either past or present UK sports professionals, represent Sky Sports Living for Sport and visit the schools to motivate students.
