David Beckham was the best sporting role model of 2009 according to a survey that was commissioned by SkillsActive to find the best and worst sporting models of last year.

Perhaps unsurprisingly Tiger Woods topped the poll for the worst sporting model following his recent indiscretions.

SkillsActive, the Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure and Learning, is launching a Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure this year which includes a module on teaching young people how to be good sporting role models.

The research, which also examined the public’s views on how they want to see their sports heroes and heroines to behave, found that fair play was the most important factor in being a top role model.
