Energy company SSE has revealed it will become the title sponsor of the Wembley Arena after signing a ten-year deal with venue operators AEG that will see the venue be known as the SSE Arena from 1st June.
The 12,500-capacity arena, which opened in 1934 next to Wembley Stadium, is predominantly a music and comedy venue but is an occasional host of sporting events.
Official figures for the new deal with AEG have not been released, however the Guardian newspaper has valued the sponsorship at £1.5 million a year.
AEG signed a 15-year deal to operate Wembley Arena in September last year.
A key venue in the London Olympics of both 1948 and 2012, Wembley Arena has recently played host to Masters snooker events, Premier League Darts, WWE, and various MMA bouts.
SSE, based in Perth, Scotland, is a top-tier sponsor of this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the title partner of the SSE Hydro, another AEG-run venue in the same city.
In February the Arena’s neighbour, Wembley Stadium, confirmed a six-year, £25 million ‘lead partner’ deal with mobile operator EE.
