Tough Mudder organisers have revealed it expects to break the 100,000 participant mark across its UK events in 2014.

The extreme obstacle race series sold 15,000 tickets in 2012, 80,000 in 2013 and have revealed they expect to sell well over 100,000 in 2014.

Tough Mudder – now estimated to be worth upwards of £50 million – is a series of 10-12 mile mud-run events designed by British Special Forces.

John Fidoe, marketing director at Tough Mudder, told sportindustry.biz what makes the race different: ‘Tough Mudder is a challenge not a race, which encourages a level of teamwork and camaraderie that you don’t always see at other obstacle runs.’

‘This makes the event more fun as participants work together to help their fellow Mudders complete the course rather than pushing for a specific time – and of course everyone gets to enjoy a pint together at the end.’

Also popular all over America and the wider world, the global series will have reportedly seen two million men and women aged 18 and over by the end of 2014 – with 78% hauling themselves through obstacles such as Electroshock Therapy (pictured above) and across the finish line.

The event has also built up an impressive sponsorship portfolio in the last few years, with international brands such as Under Armour, Lifeproof, Jeep, Volvic and Help for Heroes counted amongst the Tough Mudder family.
