Wada Nears ‘athlete Passport’ Scheme

Despite receiving heavy criticism for its current athlete tracking scheme, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has claimed it is close to implementing a new Athlete Passport system.

Under the new system, testers would have lifelong ‘biological fingerprints’ of competitors to compare drug-test samples. Reportedly, the Athlete Passport could help detect changes in the blood chemistry missed by other methods.

WADA has claimed it would aid their target testing of suspected drug abusers and provide another deterrent on top of out-of-competition testing programmes.

The new scheme will join the already controversial Whereabouts system that WADA introduced, which has caused outrage amongst top athletes such as Andy Murray, who claim that the current procedures are an invasion of privacy.

However media reports have claimed the Athlete Passport system is close to becoming implemented, as the problem of coming up with a system that can be used in court is allegedly close to being solved.
