Yahoo! has struck a deal with pan-regional broadcaster Eurosport to create a
co-branded online sports news and community site.
The site combines Eurosport’s editorial strengths with Yahoo!’s experience in
creating online communities to provide an attractive user experience and a
high-value proposition for advertisers.
The new site is scheduled for launch later this year with initial rollout of
the service in Germany, Italy, and the UK, each with their own tailored content.
Speaking to Sportindustry.biz, Jon Disby, VP of media and
communications at Yahoo!, comments: ‘There are relatively few premium sports
sites out there that can justifiably claim to offer top-rate editorial on a
similarly high-class social media platform. We’re hoping that our tie-in with
Eurosport will take this site to the top of the tree of sports sites in terms of
users.’
Disby also emphasised the importance of basing the site around ‘head and tail
content’ – in other words ensuring that the attraction for advertisers is as
strong as it is for users.
‘We’re focusing on making the site scaleable and manageable. In other words,
you have to create the ability to monetise online.’
