YouTube has released details behind the consumption of its live streaming of the London 2012 Olympics, stating that 231 million live streams were delivered in total throughout the Games.

The Google-owned video-sharing platform said 72 million of the total streams were consumed via the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) official YouTube channel.

The IOC furthered its efforts to provide coverage of London’s Olympic Games around the world by announcing in June that it would provide free live streaming of the event through its official YouTube channel to 64 territories across Asia and Africa.

The live-streaming provided exclusive digital access to London 2012 in territories where digital broadcast rights had not already been acquired by the IOC’s broadcast partners. These included India, Malaysia and Thailand in Asia, as well as Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria in Africa. The live streaming on the IOC’s YouTube channel consisted of 11 different simultaneous high-definition broadcasts, all with English language commentary.

YouTube said the vast majority of its live streams were viewed in the United States through its partnership with US Olympic rights holder NBC. NBCOlympics.com delivered more than 159 million total streams. Through NBC’s native apps, 37% of views came from mobile devices, and more than half were in HD.

YouTube added that it delivered video footage for more than half a million live streams at the same time at its peak consumption time.
