It might not be coming home this year but English sport did have other things to shout about with Sarah Glenn, Alfie Hewett and Jimmy Anderson all flying the flag this weekend…

Spain won the 2024 European Championships by beating England 2-1 in Berlin.

Despite hopes Gareth Southgate might finally get over the line and win the England men’s side an elusive major trophy, an excellent Spanish side ended hopes when Mikel Oyarzabal scored a 86th minute winner in the Euro 2024 final.

Spain had taken the lead in the match when Nico Williams opened the scoring at the start of the second half. Cole Palmer then came off the bench to equalise but the Three Lions went on to concede again before the final whistle.

England manager Gareth Southgate said his side were beaten by “the best team in the tournament.”

Earlier in the tournament, SIG held a Sport Industry Socials Euro Watch Party for Members and Partners.

Carlos Alcaraz powered to victory over an out-of-sorts Novak Djokovic to retain his men’s singles title at Wimbledon.

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) recently penned a five-year extension that will see Wimbledon remain on BeIN Sports in France until 2028.

Britain’s Alfie Hewett won the Wimbledon wheelchair singles to complete a career Grand Slam – and then defended the doubles title.

Hewett had fallen to agonising defeats in the past two singles finals at Wimbledon, but this time he dominated Spain’s Martin de la Puente in his 6-2 6-3 win on Court One.

About four hours later, Hewett and British partner Gordon Reid were embracing on court three after beating Japan’s Takuya Miki and Tokito Oda 6-4 7-6 (7-2).

James Anderson ended his legendary international career in England’s crushing victory over West Indies in the first Test at Lord’s.

England chased down New Zealand’s target of 104 for the loss of just three wickets in the fourth T20 at The Kia Oval to continue their unbeaten summer.

Having opted to bat, New Zealand failed to set a defendable total, posting only 103-8, with England spinners Sarah Glenn (4-19) and Sophie Ecclestone (2-16) tearing through their batting line-up after the powerplay.

Earlier this year, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has launched a new initiative, titled the Big Cricket Conversation, which invites fans, players and stakeholders to have their say on the culture of the sport.

The Scot, pipped to the title by Rory McIlroy’s brilliant birdie-birdie finish a year ago, was not to be denied this time as he staged a late surge to glory at the Renaissance Club.

MacIntyre gained four strokes in his closing five holes to post a three-under 67 that was capped by a title-winning birdie putt from 22 feet on the last.
